commercials
its a little late, but I wanted to talk about the silent commercials... As a marketing major im already pretty aware of how a commercial is put together... whenever an advertisment comes on the tv it interests me to try and figure out how and why they created the message, how they are trying to relay that message, and who they are targeting by their message. Without sound commercials are very wierd. We as consumers and humans in the 21st century rely a lot of how we perceive a mood on what we hear, especially in an advertisment. If theres suspenseful music playing the ad is meant to strike suspense, etc. Because of DVR, a couple of the commercials I saw I had the oppurtunity to watch both with sound and without. Some of the ads you could understand right away what they were selling or informing about, others were very abstract and pointless. The audio in these advertisements including speech and ambient sound help a bunch to relay their message. All in all what I have learned from this is that, though sound is important, if the visuals are strong enough, that much sound isnt always necessary.
